Unit 213 (Southern Nevada Desert Ranges)

Unit 213 bighorn use classic southern Nevada cliff-and-wash country. The unit's ranges have an active NDOW-maintained guzzler network, and glassing productive water sources is the foundation of Unit 213 scouting.

Cliff bands and escape terrain

Rams default to cliff bands with good overview — look for ledge systems that give a ram both bedding cover and visual escape across a canyon.

Guzzler networks

NDOW maintains guzzlers and natural tanks across southern Nevada sheep habitat. Map every known water in Unit 213 and time mid-morning glass sessions to catch rams during water trips.

Unit 213 is a water-and-glass hunt. With 20 tags over three years against 694 applicants, most drawn hunters use a staged approach: summer scouting, opening-weekend ram identification, then patient stalking once a target ram is confirmed.

Scout water, scout again

Plan at least two pre-hunt scouting weekends to catalog rams at specific water sources. Desert sheep are creatures of habit — a ram that drank at a particular guzzler in August is likely to be there in October.

Use mornings, save shade

Glass from shadow and cover in early morning, then retreat during midday heat. Afternoon glass sessions from 3 pm onward often reveal bedded rams shifting to evening feeding.

Plan the exit

Pack-out logistics in cliff country are demanding. Plan your shooting position so the ram falls to a manageable retrieval slope — a ram down in a knife-edge canyon can turn a one-day hunt into a three-day evacuation.
