The wilderness holds classic desert bighorn escape terrain: limestone rimrock, steep drainages, and sandstone cliff bands. Glass from elevated positions across the canyon systems.

Water points and guzzler network

Catalog every known water source — NDOW-maintained guzzlers and natural tanks — and build glassing stops around them. Desert bighorn visit water on predictable cycles that concentrate activity when temperatures are high.

Unit 212's tag issuance (28 tags over 3 years against 682 applicants) makes it one of southern Nevada's more frequently drawn bighorn hunts. The hunt still rewards a multi-day, water-and-glass approach.

Summer scouting pays off

Plan two or three summer scouting trips to locate rams at water and catalog the cliff bands they use for bedding. Identifying a specific mature ram before opening day turns a difficult season hunt into a targeted stalk.

Work the wilderness edge

The Muddy Mountains Wilderness is foot-only access. Plan approach hikes from BLM trailheads along the wilderness boundary, then work ridgelines into the cliff country.

Vegas-based logistics

Unit 212 is within a 60-90 minute drive of Las Vegas for most access points. Many drawn hunters base in Las Vegas or Henderson with full services and drive to glass, converting a remote hunt into a hybrid camp-or-hotel operation.
