Where to Find Elk in Unit 75
Elk in Unit 75 distribute across the vast terrain from the Vallecito Reservoir area to the Weminuche Wilderness and south toward Durango.
Archery Season (August-September)
During archery season, bulls hold in the high country above 10,000 feet near the Weminuche Wilderness boundary and along the upper Pine River. Focus on wallows in the spruce-fir transition and alpine meadow edges.
Rifle Season (October-November)
Once rifle pressure and snow build, elk migrate down from the Weminuche into the timbered drainages between 8,000-10,000 feet along the Vallecito, Pine, and Piedra Rivers. The Florida River drainage near Durango also concentrates migrating elk.
Water and Feed
Elk depend on the Pine River, Piedra River, Vallecito Creek, Florida River, and dozens of tributaries. Vallecito Reservoir and the Weminuche alpine lakes provide additional water.
