Where to Find Gould's Turkeys in Unit 35A

Gould's in the Huachucas use the oak-pine drainages and upper elevation canyons.

Carr Canyon / Miller Canyon

The east-side canyons rising out of Sierra Vista hold roost flocks in Arizona sycamore and mature ponderosa. Listen at dawn from the upper campground loops.

Ramsey Canyon / Brown Canyon

These drainages host Gould's flocks that roost high and descend to feed along creek bottoms. Pre-scout roost trees before opening morning.

West-Side Sunnyside Canyon Drainages

The remote west side of the range (Sunnyside and Copper Canyon) produces lighter-pressure birds for hunters willing to drive the long gravel approach.

Turkey Success Rates

Unit 35A Gould's success runs 40–60% — strong numbers given the unit's limited tags and careful management. Mature gobblers are common and Gould's body size impresses most hunters who have only pursued other subspecies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Gould's turkeys different from Merriam's?
Gould's are the largest wild turkey subspecies by body size, with longer legs and brighter white tail tips than Merriam's. They're found only in a few Arizona and New Mexico sky-island ranges in the U.S., and in northern Mexico.
How many bonus points for Unit 35A Gould's turkey?
Residents often need 3–8 bonus points. Nonresidents face the 10% cap and may need similar or slightly more. Apply annually for the loyalty bonus and use the hunter-education bonus ticket if you qualify.
Is Unit 35A turkey a safe hunt given border proximity?
Sierra Vista and the east-side canyons are heavily patrolled and considered safe. West-side canyons see Border Patrol presence. Always carry ID, tell someone your hunt plan, and stay alert.
Is Unit 35A a good beginner AZ mule deer draw?
Yes. With 150 tags against ~139 three-year applicants it draws very accessibly — often with 0 to 1 bonus points for rifle — making it one of the best entry-point southeastern AZ sky-island deer hunts.
When is the rut in Unit 35A?
Southeastern Arizona mule deer rut peaks roughly early to mid-December. Late rifle hunts that overlap the rut produce the most visible mature-buck opportunity.
Can I hunt anywhere in Unit 35A without a Fort Huachuca permit?
Unit 35A covers Coronado National Forest and state/BLM land north of Fort Huachuca — no military permit is required for this land. Fort Huachuca itself is a separate special management unit (FTHU) requiring military installation authorization. Confirm boundaries on AZGFD unit maps before hunting near the installation.
