Unit 29 (Pinaleno Mountains)
Arizona Hunting Guide — Mule Deer, Turkey, Coues Whitetail Deer
Unit 29 covers the Pinaleno Mountains north of Willcox and east of Safford — Arizona's premier sky-island sky range with Mt. Graham topping out at 10,720 ft. Mule deer hunts here draw ~175 tags against ~301 recent 3-year applicants, putting odds at roughly 55-60% average. Per AZGFD's GMU 29 info, the unit offers extraordinary habitat diversity from Sonoran desert on the valley floor to spruce-fir near Mt. Graham's summit. Deer shift dramatically by season and elevation, and the unit produces the occasional trophy buck thanks to limited road access in the upper Coronado NF.

Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 29
Unit 29 deer distribute across four elevation bands — each holds different deer at different times.
Mixed Conifer (8,000–10,500 ft)
August archery deer hold in the upper Pinalenos near Mt. Graham. Access via the Swift Trail (Highway 366). Quality summer bucks use the parks and aspen edges.
Ponderosa / Oak Mid-Slope (6,500–8,500 ft)
The main October rifle habitat. Deer drop into ponderosa-oak benches as temperatures cool. Forest roads off the Swift Trail give good morning access.
PJ and Chaparral (5,000–6,500 ft)
Winter range. Deer push down here after cold snaps. Good late-hunt habitat on the foothill edge.
Desert Edge (3,500–5,000 ft)
Resident desert bucks hold year-round on the west and south faces of the range. Smaller-bodied but patternable.
