Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 29

Unit 29 deer distribute across four elevation bands — each holds different deer at different times.

Mixed Conifer (8,000–10,500 ft)

August archery deer hold in the upper Pinalenos near Mt. Graham. Access via the Swift Trail (Highway 366). Quality summer bucks use the parks and aspen edges.

Ponderosa / Oak Mid-Slope (6,500–8,500 ft)

The main October rifle habitat. Deer drop into ponderosa-oak benches as temperatures cool. Forest roads off the Swift Trail give good morning access.

PJ and Chaparral (5,000–6,500 ft)

Winter range. Deer push down here after cold snaps. Good late-hunt habitat on the foothill edge.

Desert Edge (3,500–5,000 ft)

Resident desert bucks hold year-round on the west and south faces of the range. Smaller-bodied but patternable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive to the top of the Pinalenos?
Yes — Highway 366 (the Swift Trail) is paved to the upper elevations and provides summer access to 9,000+ ft habitat. The road closes seasonally above Riggs Lake for winter; check ADOT and USFS status before your hunt.
What bonus points do I need for Unit 29 mule deer?
Low-to-mid-point applicants (1-4 bonus points) draw the main Unit 29 rifle code regularly. Archery and HAM codes typically draw with 0-2 points. Arizona's weighted bonus-point system with Hunter Education bonus rewards every year of applying.
What turkey subspecies is in Unit 29/30A?
Gould's turkey — the largest of the North American wild turkey subspecies. Gould's populations in the Pinaleno complex are scattered but expanding thanks to AZGFD management and habitat work.
When does the 29/30A turkey season run?
Arizona spring turkey hunts run in April. The exact dates and hunt code split (youth, HAM, general) vary by year — always confirm with the current-year Arizona Hunting Regulations before the draw deadline.
Is Unit 29 near the US-Mexico border a safety concern for hunters?
Unit 29 is in the Altar Valley near the border. AZGFD does not restrict hunting here, but hunters should be aware of the remote location. Hunting in groups, carrying satellite communication, and informing someone of your plans are prudent practices. The BLM and AZGFD land is legally huntable — verify current conditions with the Tucson Field Office before your hunt.
