Elk Hunting in Unit 107

Elk Area 107 covers the Wyoming slope of the Black Hills in Crook and Weston counties — ponderosa pine ridges and grass-meadow parks along the South Dakota line. It is a relatively small area by Wyoming standards but carries a healthy resident herd and a generous tag allocation. Three-year records show 91 applicants against 525 tags, which makes this one of the easier elk draws in the state. We hunt Area 107 as a still-hunt and glassing mix — the pine benches hold bedded elk tight, and the grassy parks pull animals into shootable country morning and evening.

Elk in Area 107 use the Black Hills ponderosa belt as year-round cover, stepping into grass parks and meadow edges to feed.

Archery Season (September)

Bulls gather in the aspen pockets and pine benches between 5,500 and 6,500 feet. We focus on the edges of grassy meadows where the pine canopy breaks up — wallows and seep springs in those transitions pull bulls in during the rut.

Rifle Season (October–November)

Once pressure builds, elk slip into the thicker pine stringers on north-facing slopes and feed in the parks only under low light. We move slowly through dog-hair pine with the wind in our face and glass every park at dawn and dusk.

Late Season

Early snow on the Black Hills ridges nudges elk onto lower benches near private alfalfa fields. Staying on public pine ridges next to those ag edges produces crossing bulls.

We treat Area 107 as a timber-and-parks hunt — elk are never far from pine cover, so patience and wind discipline do the work.

Still-Hunt the Pine Benches

Move one slow step at a time along benches below ridgelines, pausing every few yards to glass through the pine trunks. Bedded bulls often hold until you are within 60 yards, and a careful pace turns up animals other hunters walk past.

Park Edges at First Light

Set up overlooking a grass park before shooting light and let elk come to you. The BHNF park system here is small enough to cover thoroughly with a spotter on a tripod.
