Unit 029 (Hanna Basin)

Wyoming Hunting Guide — Pronghorn

Pronghorn Area 29 covers the Hanna Basin and surrounding sage country in south-central Wyoming — one of the state's highest-tag pronghorn areas. With roughly 907 tags over three years against 240 applicants, this is a near-guaranteed draw that still produces solid buck quality. We target Area 29 for introductory hunts, second tags, and youth/first-timer opportunities where draw odds matter as much as trophy ceiling.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Area 29

Pronghorn in Area 29 are widespread — the challenge is not locating animals but sorting mature bucks from big bachelor groups.

Central Hanna Basin

BLM sage country between Hanna and Medicine Bow holds dense herds. Stock tanks concentrate animals in dry weather.

Elk Mountain Foothills

The transition country on the Elk Mountain south slope holds bigger, older bucks that push off the open basin under pressure.

I-80 Corridor

BLM country north and south of I-80 holds strong numbers and takes opening-weekend pressure. Pressure thins by midweek.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Area 29 a good first Wyoming hunt?
Yes. Near-guaranteed draw odds, easy terrain, abundant public land, and consistent 85-plus percent success rates make Area 29 one of Wyoming's best intro pronghorn units.
Can I find a 75-inch buck here?
Yes, with effort. The foothill transitions around Elk Mountain and less-pressured north BLM consistently produce mature bucks in the 72-78 inch range. Occasional 80-plus heads come out each season.
How bad is the gumbo?
As bad as anywhere in Wyoming. A half-inch of rain can strand a 4WD truck for 24-48 hours. Watch the forecast and do not venture off graded roads in wet conditions.
