Wyoming Hunting Guide — Pronghorn

Pronghorn Area 4 covers the rolling sage and grassland country east of Sheridan in northeast Wyoming, stretching toward the Montana and South Dakota lines. We target this area for its good tag availability (199 tags over three years against 257 applicants), its mix of BLM and walk-in public land, and for mature bucks that regularly top 75 inches on the CRP-adjacent ground.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Area 4

Pronghorn in Area 4 concentrate where grass-sage country meets CRP and alfalfa on the Powder River drainage.

Early Season

Bucks feed on CRP edges and alfalfa near Clearmont, Leiter, and the Powder River proper. Mornings and evenings pull antelope onto the greener feed; midday they push out onto BLM sage.

Mid Season

Pressure drops groups onto larger BLM parcels and walk-in sections. The rolling country east of I-90 between Clearmont and Arvada holds consistent numbers.

Late Season

Frost tightens up the groups. Bucks hold on south-facing benches on walk-in parcels and the state-section grid.

Area 4 is a walk-in and BLM glassing hunt with heavy reliance on the WGFD public access atlas.

Build a Walk-In Plan

Download the current WGFD public access atlas before the hunt and map out 6-10 walk-in parcels. Rotate between them to avoid repeating pressure.

Glass From County Roads

The gravel road grid east of Sheridan gives constant glassing vantage. Stop every half-mile and pick apart the draws.

Stalk the Coulees

Powder River-country coulees run deeper than the topo suggests. Drop into a coulee, follow it 300-600 yards, and pop up inside rifle range.

Talk to Landowners

Many of the biggest bucks live on private CRP. Door-knocking a week before opening day — with a legitimate ask — occasionally opens private access on share-the-game terms.

Sheridan has developed campgrounds. BLM dispersed camping is allowed in most areas, though public parcels are checkerboarded — confirm boundaries.

County gravel roads handle trailers easily in dry weather. Gumbo is a risk after rain.

Powder River and Clear Creek run year-round. Uplands are dry — pack water.

I-90 is the backbone. County roads are graded gravel; BLM two-tracks vary. Avoid after heavy rain.

How important is the walk-in program for Area 4?

Critical. Walk-in parcels unlock the best CRP-adjacent ground that would otherwise be inaccessible. A serious Area 4 hunter should plan the trip around the current walk-in atlas.

Is Sheridan the right base?

Yes, for most hunters. It has lodging, gear shops, restaurants, and easy access to the east and north halves of the unit. Buffalo is slightly closer to the south end.

Are there grizzly bears in Area 4?

No. Grizzlies are not established in northeast Wyoming. Standard black bear awareness is enough.
