Granite Cliff Bands

Billies live on the exposed cliff systems — Lone Peak itself, Box Elder Peak, and the ridgelines in American Fork and Little Cottonwood drainages.

Mid-day feeding and bedding happen in talus basins at 10,000–11,000 ft. Glass from across-basin vantage points.

Salt Licks and Mineral Sites

How to Hunt Lone Peak Mountain Goats

This is an alpine mountaineering hunt as much as a hunt. Physical conditioning and backcountry skills are non-negotiable.

Pre-Hunt Scouting

Scout at least one long-weekend trip to identify billy groups. The Lone Peak, Box Elder, and upper American Fork drainages are all valid starting points.

Alpine Glassing

Climb to a vantage point above 10,000 ft at dawn. Goats stand out against granite from 2+ miles away.

Technical Approach

Once we find a billy, the approach often involves exposed scrambling or snow/ice travel. Carry a helmet, trekking poles, and know your limits. Never push a stalk that exceeds your technical comfort.

Recovery Planning

Plan the pack-out before the shot. A goat down on a cliff face is a serious recovery problem; aim to harvest in accessible terrain.
