Unit Southwest Desert, North (Southwest Desert — North)

Utah Hunting Guide — Elk

The Southwest Desert, North elk unit covers the northern half of Utah's Southwest Desert elk complex — including the Needle Range, King Top, Wah Wah Mountains, and the surrounding high-desert basins of Beaver and Millard counties. The unit is a mix of BLM Cedar City District ground, SITLA parcels, and a few inholdings. Elk here key on the pinyon-juniper benches, higher-elevation aspen pockets on King Top, and the mountain brush draws of the Needle and Wah Wah ranges. It is classic limited-entry desert-elk country with exceptional bull quality.

Where to Find Southwest Desert North Bull Elk

Southwest Desert elk follow classic desert-elk patterns: high country in early season, moving to pinyon-juniper benches and brush draws as pressure and weather shift them down.

King Top Aspen Pockets

King Top's higher aspen and mountain-brush pockets hold rutting bulls in September. Access via BLM roads off SR-21 — long drives and high clearance required.

Needle Range Upper Basins

The Needle Range holds bulls in the upper basins and along the brush-filled east slope. Morning glassing from the Needle Range road network turns up bulls at first light.

Wah Wah Mountains / North End

The north end of the Wah Wah Mountains holds scattered bulls along the aspen-mountain-brush transition. Water at the few reliable springs and seeps is a key concentrator.

Southwest Desert, North is one of Utah's premier limited-entry desert-elk hunts. Bull quality is above average — the unit consistently produces mature, hard-horned bulls given the low pressure and good habitat. UDWR's Big Game Harvest Data page publishes weapon-specific success annually; archery lags any-legal-weapon but is still productive for hunters who put in the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Southwest Desert, North differ from Southwest Desert, South?
They are separate elk subunits split within the broader Southwest Desert complex. North covers the Needle Range, King Top, and Wah Wah country; South covers the ranges and basins south of the split. Each is drawn independently. Check the UDWR Hunt Planner for exact boundaries.
Is water availability a real problem in this unit?
Yes. Reliable water is scarce across much of the Southwest Desert, especially in drought years. Plan water caches along your route and never rely on finding water by accident. Carry substantially more drinking water than you think you'll need.
