Where to Find Pronghorn in South Slope Vernal

Uinta Basin pronghorn concentrate where sage, water, and open line-of-sight come together.

Sagebrush Plateau South of Vernal

The flats south of Vernal toward Pelican Lake and Ouray hold the densest pronghorn populations. Look for bucks working between water sources and alfalfa field edges.

Water Holes and Stock Tanks

BLM-installed stock tanks and natural playas pull pronghorn in warm early-season weather. Glass tanks at dawn and dusk.

Ouray NWR Edges

Pronghorn travel between the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge boundaries and surrounding public sagebrush. Bucks often bed on open flats within easy walk of the refuge edge.

How to Hunt South Slope Vernal Pronghorn

Open-country spot-and-stalk is the name of the game.

Drive-and-Glass the Road Grid

The dense lease-road grid across BLM ground lets you cover massive territory. Drive, stop, glass with a tripod-mounted spotter, and move on. Two or three mornings of this usually locates shootable bucks.

Belly-Crawl Stalks

Once a buck is located, terrain features (shallow draws, sagebrush lines) are your only cover. Plan stalks that use every inch of relief and expect to low-crawl the last 200 yards.

Decoy Setups During the Rut

In September rut, a pronghorn buck decoy set in sight of a territorial buck can pull him into bow range fast. Kneel behind the decoy with a blind skirt if possible.

South Slope Vernal pronghorn is a mid-tier Utah limited-entry draw. Roughly 160 buck tags per year against 848 applicants over a rolling 3-year window means residents often draw at 3–6 bonus points for rifle and 1–2 for archery. UDWR uses weighted bonus points — not squared-points and not a pure preference draw.

Limited. Stock tanks and Ouray NWR provide wildlife water but little human-usable water. Pack all drinking water.

Primary highways paved. BLM lease road network is gravel or two-track — generally 2WD passable when dry, treacherous when wet (bentonite clay turns to grease).

Terrain Difficulty

Easy. Rolling sagebrush flats, minimal elevation change, walkable. Cactus and biscuitroot are the main obstacles on belly crawls.

Moderate on weekends, low midweek. Oil-and-gas workers use some of the same roads — expect occasional rig traffic.

September days 75–90°F, nights 45–55°F. October cools significantly. Late-season storms can turn roads to mud instantly.

Vernal (15 minutes to most hunting areas), Roosevelt (30 minutes west), Duchesne (45 minutes to western subunit).

Note: A tripod-mounted 15x or 20x binocular is worth 10x more than a rifle in this country. Long-range practice in wind out to 400 yards pays off — pronghorn rarely let you close inside that range on open flats.
