Pronghorn visit water sources reliably in the morning. Identify active tanks via Google Earth and confirm activity with trail cameras or direct observation before setting up an ambush.

Though the flat is predominantly open, small ridges, terrain breaks, and wash systems provide the only cover. Pronghorn use these terrain features as travel corridors when moving between grazing areas and water — focus ambush efforts on these natural funnels.

Long-Range Spot and Stalk

Glass from every elevated point, identify the target buck, and plan a stalk using the limited terrain features — washes, terrain breaks, and ridgelines. Pronghorn have exceptional eyesight at a mile and must be approached from extreme distances using every available cover. A 200-plus yard stalk finishing shot is common in open terrain.

Water-Hole Ambush

Dig a shallow pit or use a natural depression near an active stock tank to stay below the pronghorn's sightline. Set up before dawn and wait. Pronghorn approaching a tank at 80 to 100 yards offers a clean shot opportunity rarely available in open country stalking.

Decoy and Rut Strategy (September)

During the September rut, a pronghorn decoy combined with a doe call can bring a territorial buck to within shooting distance. Set up downwind from the direction you expect the buck to approach and be ready for a quick shot opportunity.
