Hatch Point Rim and Lockhart Rim

Rams feed out from the rimrock onto the Mancos Shale benches at first and last light. Glass the rim-to-bench transition.

Canyon Heads and Side Drainages

Deep side canyons running down to the Colorado River hold ewes and rams. The narrow heads of those canyons concentrate animals during hot days.

Like every desert sheep unit, this is a glassing and stalking hunt that rewards serious prep.

Pre-Hunt Coordination with UDWR

When you draw, call the Southeast Region biologist. They will share harvest locations, known ram groups, and water information — it's the single best hour of scouting you'll do.

Long-Range Glassing

Set up on high points along the rim system with a tripod-mounted spotter at dawn. Work the country methodically.

Rim-to-Bench Stalks

Once we pin a ram on a bench, we plan a stalk along the rim itself rather than dropping in from above. Sheep look uphill, not forward along the rimrock.

Lockhart runs about 51 applicants per tag across the 3-year window. Utah's weighted bonus-point lottery splits the permits roughly half-and-half between the max-points pool and a random-weighted drawing. Each bonus point adds one more chance in the random-weighted half — a linear weighting. Low-point hunters still have a lottery shot every year, but expect to build 10+ points before you become truly competitive in the max-points half.
