Unit Red Iron (Red Iron)

Red Iron bucks use the Pahvant Range terrain in a classic elevational migration pattern. The red-soil ridges and rocky outcrops are priority glassing areas throughout the season.

Rocky Red-Soil Ridges

Bucks feed on mineral-rich vegetation along rocky ridgelines in early season. Glass these exposures at dawn from opposing hillsides. Bucks prefer south-facing ridges in cool September mornings and shift to north-facing slopes as temperatures rise.

Oak-Brush and Serviceberry Draws

Draws choked with oak-brush and serviceberry concentrate feeding bucks through October. The brushy draws also serve as escape cover — pressure bucks into draws from above by approaching from the ridge rather than the drainage bottom.

Sage and Grass Benches

Open benches between the rocky ridges and lower desert serve as staging areas for deer transitioning between elevation bands. Glass these benches in the final hour of afternoon light.

Red Iron rewards hunters who cover ridgeline terrain aggressively on foot and use the red rocky outcrops as glassing perches.

Ridge-Running Glass-and-Stalk

Work along the main ridgeline, glassing both sides systematically every 200–300 yards. The red-soil exposures create contrast that makes spotting brown deer coats easier than in typical sage or timber country.

Rut Ambush Setups

In late October, set up on saddles and ridge crossings where bucks cruise between doe groups. Rut-active bucks move extensively midday — maintain presence through the full day rather than just dawn and dusk.
