Unit Raft River

The Raft River Mountains rise sharply from the surrounding desert basin, creating a dramatic elevation gradient that deer exploit throughout the season. Bucks summer at high elevations in aspen and subalpine zones, then migrate downward toward sagebrush winter range as temperatures drop in October.

The best hunting opportunities come during this downward migration — bucks move predictably through mountain passes and canyon mouths transitioning from high country to foothill sagebrush. Glass from ridge tops at first light to catch deer on their morning feeding move before they bed in timber.

A glassing-intensive approach works best in the Raft River Mountains. Set up on prominent ridgelines or peaks before legal shooting light and cover multiple drainages simultaneously. The open mountain terrain allows hunters to spot bucks at extreme distances and plan careful stalks.

Coordinate closely with the ranch manager for access routes and current deer distribution. Early season finds deer higher; by late October, target the transition zone between subalpine timber and the upper sagebrush benches where bucks stage during the pre-rut period.
