Oak Ranch's dense oakbrush draws are the primary daytime cover for bucks during hunting season. Deer move from bedding areas in the oaks to open sage parks and adjacent hayfields in the early morning and evening feeding windows.

Focus on the transition zone between the oakbrush lower slopes and the sage-covered benches above. Ridge saddles connecting adjacent oak-covered draws are natural buck travel corridors, especially during the pre-rut and rut periods in late October.

Oakbrush country rewards hunters who glass from high points before entering the brushy draws. Locate bucks on open slopes at first light, then plan a stalk before they disappear into the dense cover for the day. Still-hunting slowly through the oaks at midday can push bucks onto open ground for shot opportunities.

Rattling and calling can be effective during the rut — mature bucks in low-pressure environments often respond aggressively. Set up near oak-brush edges where bucks cruise between bedding draws seeking does.
