Where to Find Moose in Kamas

Shiras moose use willow bottoms, beaver-pond complexes, and timbered drainages along the Uinta front.

Willow Meadows

Glass willow meadows at first and last light; bulls commonly feed into the open during the cooler margins of the day.

Mixed Timber Drainages

During midday, bulls bed in mixed conifer and aspen. Still-hunt slowly and listen for movement in brush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kamas include wilderness areas?
Portions of the hunt overlap or border designated wilderness within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Confirm wilderness boundaries with the Hunt Boundary map and USFS maps before hunting.
Can nonresidents apply?
Yes. Nonresidents apply through the same draw; the nonresident cap is roughly 10% of issued permits.
Is Kamas a good first limited-entry unit?
Yes. With 31 tags against roughly 130 applicants and close-in access from the Wasatch front, Kamas is one of Utah's most attainable limited-entry deer hunts.
How bad is hunting pressure on Kamas?
Higher than most Utah limited-entry units because of the Salt Lake commute, but still nothing like general-season pressure. We plan around road access and stick to lesser-used trailheads.
