Unit Heist

Heist's pronghorn herds range across the open sage flats and basin floor of Utah's west desert. Water sources — whether natural springs, stock tanks, or ranch water systems — concentrate pronghorn predictably, especially during the warm August hunting season.

Glass wide from any elevated terrain feature available. The west desert's dramatic distance visibility means bucks can often be spotted 2–3 miles away with good optics. Once a target buck is identified, assess his horns carefully before committing to a stalk — distance in open terrain is notoriously difficult to judge.

Pronghorn hunting in the Heist unit is a patience and precision game. Use high-quality optics to survey open terrain from elevated positions before moving. The flat, nearly featureless west-desert environment requires hunters to use every low-profile terrain feature — dry washes, berms, sagebrush clumps — to close distance undetected.

Early morning water-hole ambushes are productive during August. Set up a natural hide or portable blind near an active water source at last light the evening before your hunt, and be in position well before first light. Pronghorn often water in the first hour after dawn.
