Unit Green River Flat

Green River Flat pronghorn concentrate on the open sage and shadscale flats above the river's canyon rim. Bucks utilize the relatively flat terrain between canyon breaks, feeding on native shrubs and any available grass. Water sources near the unit — springs, stock tanks, or proximity to the Green River drainage — anchor herd movements during the late-summer hunting season.

Glass from canyon rim edges or elevated mesa positions overlooking the flat terrain below. Pronghorn silhouettes against the open sky are visible at impressive distances in eastern Utah's clear desert air. Identify groups from afar before approaching to minimize disturbance to unhunted animals.

Green River Flat's semi-arid canyon-adjacent terrain offers both open-flat stalking and canyon-edge ambush opportunities. On the open flats, use dry washes and sagebrush for stalk cover, moving deliberately when bucks are heads-down grazing. Near canyon edges, pronghorn sometimes funnel through natural breaks in the rimrock — scout these features before the hunt to identify pinch points.

The canyon-country wind can be tricky and swirling near rimrock edges. Pay careful attention to thermals and shifting winds during stalks. Bring a rangefinder — distances in flat open terrain are consistently underestimated.
