The Sawtooth Mountains of Box Elder County provide dramatic elk habitat with distinct elevation zones. Bulls summer in aspen-spruce parks near the mountain's upper elevations, utilizing the high country until early October snows push them toward lower sage and foothill terrain.

During the September rut, bulls are vocal and active throughout the unit. Focus glassing effort on aspen parks and subalpine meadows at first light to locate bugling bulls before they retreat to timber. By October rifle season, bulls have shifted toward the mid-elevation transition zone between timber and open sagebrush — a prime hunting window as elk move to winter range.

The Box Elder, Sawtooth hunt rewards hunters who are willing to commit to the mountain. Pack in to high-country camps to access bulls before the October migration pushes them to lower elevations accessible to more hunters. Early October is the sweet spot — bulls are still in or near timber and the rut lingers for mature bulls seeking late estrus cows.

Bugling and cow-calling are effective in the first weeks of the season. Set up on downwind saddles and ridges that connect timber fingers to open parks.
