Unit 566 (Owyhee)

Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in the Owyhee WMU inhabit the steep basalt canyon walls and rocky rimrock terrain carved by the Owyhee River. Rams tend to hold higher on exposed canyon faces and rocky ridgelines, while ewes and lambs occupy somewhat lower bands of the canyon. Glass canyon walls from across-river or rim vantage points using a quality spotting scope — the tan-and-white coloring of bighorns blends into basalt but the distinctive curved horns of mature rams are identifiable at long range.

We recommend establishing high glassing positions along the canyon rim early in the morning before legal shooting light. Sheep are most active in the first two hours of daylight, moving between bedding sites on steep faces and feeding areas on flatter canyon benches. The Owyhee River jet boat access is one of the few ways to efficiently cover the canyon system during the season.

Owyhee bighorn hunting is a technical, physically demanding undertaking in extreme canyon terrain. The near-vertical basalt walls require careful route planning and confident scrambling ability. We strongly recommend hiring a guide with Owyhee canyon experience — the system is vast, and navigating it efficiently without local knowledge consumes days of limited hunt time.

Glassing Priority

The majority of successful Owyhee bighorn hunts begin with extended glassing sessions from rim positions. Identify ram bands from across the canyon before committing to a descent. The canyon depth can be 1,000 to 2,000 feet — calculate approach time and escape routes before starting any stalk.

Ram Identification

Oregon bighorn tags typically specify full-curl or three-quarter-curl rams depending on the hunt designation. Positively identify curl length before taking a shot — and do it from the same angle as the shot opportunity, as curl assessment changes dramatically with viewing angle. Pack-Out Logistics

A bighorn ram in the bottom of the Owyhee Canyon requires a serious logistical plan for recovery. Jet boat access via the Owyhee River can dramatically simplify the pack-out. Pre-arrange jet boat support if possible.
