Frequently Asked Questions

Tribal land concerns?
Jicarilla Apache boundary runs nearby — tribal land is permit-only through the tribe, not NMDGF.
Points?
None. NM uses a pure random draw.
Can I hunt inside Valles Caldera National Preserve?
The Preserve runs its own limited hunts separate from the general NM draw. Unit 7 NM tags apply to the Santa Fe NF and other public ground around the Preserve but not inside it.
Can you find pronghorn in the forested Mount Taylor slopes?
No — pronghorn are a grassland and open-country species. They do not use the dense ponderosa and mixed conifer forest on the mid and upper slopes of Mount Taylor. Focus your effort entirely on the open mesa and grassland terrain below 7,500 feet on the unit's periphery.
