Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 26

We split Unit 26 into three productive zones.

Black Range Ponderosa (7,500–9,000 ft)

The higher Black Range ridges hold bigger bucks summer through early rifle. Focus on ponderosa/oak benches on east and northeast faces.

PJ Foothills (5,500–7,000 ft)

Pinyon-juniper/Gambel-oak country dominates the central and eastern unit. Deer move through these foothills during rifle season — glass drainages at first and last light.

Grassland Edges (5,000–6,000 ft)

The eastern fringe toward Elephant Butte holds bucks on juniper-grassland transitions during late season cold snaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Unit 26 a good choice for a first-time New Mexico mule deer hunter?
Yes. With tag allocations nearly matching applicant counts, draw odds are excellent, and the Gila National Forest provides abundant public access.
Are the bighorn in Unit 26 desert bighorn or Rocky Mountain bighorn?
The Guadalupe Mountains population is classified as desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana). Confirm the current NMDGF hunt code classification as subspecies designations affect application eligibility and point pools.
Is Guadalupe Mountains National Park accessible from the hunt unit?
The park is adjacent to Unit 26 on the Texas side of the border — hunting is prohibited inside the National Park. Verify your position with GPS throughout the hunt to ensure you remain within the NM hunt unit boundary.
Is Unit 26 safe to hunt given its proximity to the US-Mexico border?
Unit 26 is in a remote borderland area. Hunters should exercise situational awareness, hunt with a partner when possible, and carry a communication device. Coordinate with NMDGF for any current advisories about the area before your hunt. The vast majority of hunters complete their hunts without incident.
Are there any pronghorn water developments in Unit 26?
NMDGF and BLM have installed guzzlers (wildlife water developments) in the southern desert units. Contact the NMDGF Las Cruces office for current guzzler locations. Some BLM maps show these features. Identifying active water sources before your hunt is one of the highest-priority pre-season tasks for Unit 26.
