Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 22

Three primary zones produce consistently.

Manzano Wilderness Fringe (8,000–9,500 ft)

Mature bucks summer high in the Manzano Wilderness and drift to the perimeter once archery starts. Hunt the aspen and oak edges.

Mid-Elevation Oak Brush (6,500–8,000 ft)

Gambel oak and mountain mahogany pockets on south slopes are textbook mule deer bedding/feeding. Glass these at first and last light.

PJ East Foothills (5,500–6,500 ft)

Late-season rifle hunts pay off in the pinyon-juniper east-of-Manzanos foothills when cold snaps push deer lower.
