Where to Find Elk in Unit 21B

We target three habitat bands in the Magdalenas.

North Baldy/South Baldy (9,500–10,700 ft)

High spruce-fir and aspen on the Baldy peaks hold mature bulls pre-rut and through archery.

Mixed Conifer Benches (8,000–9,500 ft)

North-facing benches with conifer and aspen are primary bedding. Rifle season bulls hold here and feed into openings at dawn/dusk.

Ponderosa/Oak Foothills (7,000–8,000 ft)

Lower ponderosa parks concentrate elk during cold storms. Water tanks on the east and south foothills are reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NM's E-PLUS program affect Unit 21B?
Unit 21B has limited private-land holdings, so most tags are public-draw rather than landowner E-PLUS authorizations. Check the NMDGF RIB for current private-land allocations.
