Where to Find Elk in Unit 16E

Unit 16E elk are concentrated in Cibola National Forest ponderosa and mixed-conifer habitat in the Magdalena Mountains area.

Magdalena Mountains Crest

The Magdalena Mountains crest and upper slopes hold elk through summer and into the archery rut. Bulls use this high-country timber as core habitat during September and respond to calling from saddles and parks along the crest.

Ponderosa Flats and Parks

Mid-elevation ponderosa parks at 7,500-9,000 feet are primary feeding areas. Glass these openings from elevated positions at dawn and dusk for elk moving from timber to open ground.

Lower Pinon-Juniper Transition

Elk move through lower pinon-juniper terrain during migration and late-season rifle hunting. The P-J to ponderosa transition zone is productive in early October.
