Where to Find Pronghorn in Unit 45
Unit 45 pronghorn range across the Independence Valley floor and the open sagebrush basins connecting the East Humboldt and Independence Ranges. These animals are creatures of open country — keep your search on terrain below 6,000 ft where the vegetation is predominantly sagebrush and greasewood.
Independence Valley Floor
The central valley floor is the primary pronghorn zone. Herds of 5–30 animals can be spotted at first light grazing the sage flats. Bucks are often positioned on the herd periphery or slightly separated, watching for rival males and predators. Glass wide before narrowing your focus.
BLM Sagebrush Benches
Low benches and terraces above the valley floor concentrate pronghorn, particularly in the afternoon when animals seek slightly elevated ground to watch for threats. These benches are also the easiest approach terrain for a stalk — use the bench edges as natural cover to close distance.
Water Sources
Stock tanks and any available surface water become focal points in August–September. Identify water sources from satellite imagery and plan to glass these areas at midday and in late afternoon when pronghorn are actively watering.
