Where to Find Bighorn in Unit 282

Unit 282 is limestone-and-wash country. We concentrate on three habitat types.

Rimrock Bedding Shelves

Mature rams bed mid-day on narrow limestone shelves just under the skyline. We glass the tops of ridges from parallel knobs — a ram's horns will often break the rim before his body does.

Wash Mouths and Green-Up

When a late-summer storm drops rain on the unit, sheep shift to green-up along wash mouths within 48 hours. We watch the weather radar all season and reposition off any storm cell that hits Unit 282.

Guzzlers

A handful of NDOW guzzlers concentrate sheep through the heat of the hunt. We request current water-status info from the Southern Region office before heading out.

How to Hunt Bighorn in Unit 282

A Unit 282 ram hunt is a glassing hunt, not a boots-on-the-ground stalk hunt.

Biologist Consult Before Opening Day

When we draw one of the small tag allocations here, our first call is to the NDOW Southern Region biologist. One 20-minute conversation about current ram locations and guzzler status saves days of guesswork.

Two-Tripod System

We set up a binocular tripod and a spotter tripod on the same ridge knob and grid-glass limestone bands in 200-yard boxes. Most rams we find are bedded, not moving — you have to be patient with the glass.

Calculated Stalk

Once we glass up a shooter ram, we map the stalk on the topo before leaving the glassing knob. We cross only on wind-verified lines and approach to a stable shooting position rather than pushing to close distance further than needed.
