Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a Unit 261 bighorn tag?
Apply through the NDOW big game draw. Unit 261 averages roughly 5 tags per year against about 132 applicants. Nevada's weighted bonus system gives each point one additional entry in the random draw.
Is Unit 261 close to Las Vegas?
Yes — the South McCullough Range starts roughly 25-40 minutes from the Las Vegas metro, making Unit 261 one of the most logistically convenient Nevada bighorn units.
Is Unit 261 really a desert mule deer hunt?
Yes — Unit 261 sits in the southern Great Basin transitioning toward the Mojave Desert. Early-season temperatures can exceed 80°F. The terrain is wide open, arid, and demands desert-adapted hunting tactics focused on water sources and extensive glassing from vehicles.
What are the draw odds for southern Nevada mule deer units?
Southern Nevada units in the 261-268 draw group typically receive fewer applications than the famous northern ranges (Ruby Mountains, Toiyabe). Draw odds may be better than comparable quality units — check the live Draw Odds chart for the most current NDOW statistics for this group.
