Where to Find Desert Bighorn in Unit 184

Unit 184 desert bighorn live in the steep limestone and sandstone terrain of the southern Spring Mountains and adjacent desert ranges. Water sources and escape terrain drive their daily pattern.

Potosi / La Madre Ranges

The La Madre Mountain and Potosi Mountain zones on the southern edge of the Spring Mountains hold a resident bighorn band. Glass up into the limestone cliffs and canyon heads from the NV-160 (Pahrump Highway) corridor.

Red Rock Perimeter

Portions of Unit 184 that border Red Rock Canyon NCA hold bighorn that shelter in the sandstone buttresses — but confirm which specific sub-areas are open to hunting, as NCA management imposes restrictions.

Cottonwood Valley / Mt. Potosi

The country between Mt. Potosi and Cottonwood Valley features multiple tinaja water sources that concentrate bighorn during dry seasons. Glass the cliffs above the tinajas morning and evening.

RV Sites

Las Vegas has abundant full-hookup RV resorts (Oasis, Thousand Trails, etc.). Red Rock Canyon Campground takes RVs and is closest to the unit.

Camp Sites

Spring Mountains NRA USFS campgrounds (Red Rock, Hilltop, Kyle Canyon area). Lee Canyon and Kyle Canyon are reservable. Dispersed camping limited inside NRA and Red Rock NCA boundaries.

Very limited in the unit. Pack all drinking water. Las Vegas is an easy resupply base.

Road Conditions

NV-160 (Blue Diamond Highway) and NV-157/158/159 provide paved access. Forest roads into the Spring Mountains vary — some are maintained gravel, others are high-clearance. No motorized access inside wilderness areas.

Strenuous — limestone and sandstone cliffs, talus slopes, and brush-choked canyons. Footing is treacherous and heat is a serious factor in early-season hunts.
