Nevada Unit 061, 062, 064, 066 - 068, 071 - 077, 081, 101-103 — Ruby Mountains / East Humboldt moose are concentrated in riparian habitats — willow thickets along stream corridors, marshy meadows, and the edges of beaver ponds and slow-moving water in northeastern Nevada's mountain ranges. Moose are the largest cervid in North America and are relatively straightforward to locate once you identify the right habitat.

Riparian Willow Thickets

Willows constitute the primary forage for Nevada moose, and dense riparian willow stands along creeks and rivers are the most reliable places to locate animals. Focus on major drainages with permanent water and thick willow margins. Moose often stand in or near water and may be partially obscured by dense vegetation.

Marsh and Wet Meadow Areas

Open marshes, beaver pond edges, and wet meadow complexes attract moose for both forage and thermal regulation during warmer hunting seasons. These open habitats are easier to glass than dense willow thickets — incorporate them into systematic morning surveys.

Conifer Edge

Moose use conifer stands adjacent to riparian corridors for bedding and thermal cover. The transition zone between dense riparian vegetation and spruce-fir or pine forest is productive to glass in midday when animals have retreated from open water areas.

Nevada moose hunting in Unit 061, 062, 064, 066 - 068, 071 - 077, 081, 101-103 — Ruby Mountains / East Humboldt is conducted in riparian and wetland habitats that require different tactics than most western hunting. Calling, still-hunting through dense vegetation, and glassing open wetland areas from elevated positions are all productive methods.

Moose Calling

During the September-October rut, bull moose are aggressively responsive to cow calls and antler raking. Using a megaphone-style moose call (a rolled birch bark call or manufactured equivalent), imitate cow vocalizations near riparian cover. Bulls in rut will often come directly to the call, closing distance rapidly. Be prepared for a close-range shot in dense willow habitat.

Still-Hunting Willow Corridors

Moving slowly and quietly through dense riparian willows, pausing frequently to listen and glass openings, is effective for locating moose that are not responding to calls. Wind direction is critical — moose have excellent noses and will detect a hunter moving through their habitat before being seen. Work into the wind or crosswind whenever possible.

Elevated Glassing

Where terrain permits, glassing from elevated positions overlooking marsh complexes, beaver pond systems, and riparian corridors allows hunters to locate moose before entering dense vegetation. This approach is particularly effective in the early morning hours before moose retreat to dense vegetation for midday rest.

For those fortunate enough to draw, harvest success is typically high — Nevada moose populations are expanding and animals have limited hunting pressure. The primary challenge is accessing the riparian habitats where moose concentrate rather than locating animals once in the right terrain. Nevada moose draw odds are among the lowest in the western states due to the extremely small tag allocation available for Nevada's growing but still limited moose population.
