HD 556 covers open prairie and breaks country in Musselshell and Golden Valley counties, centered roughly between Roundup and Ryegate. The district is dominated by private ag and ranch ground with scattered BLM sections and heavy Block Management enrollment. Where to Find Pronghorn in HD 556

HD 556 pronghorn live on the open sage benches and shortgrass prairie that stretches between the Musselshell River to the north and the Bull Mountains to the south. Concentrate scouting on the sagebrush/grass transitions.

North of Roundup

The country along Highway 87 north of Roundup has consistently good bucks on BMA ranches. Glass from elevated breaks looking down on the flats at dawn.

Between Ryegate and Lavina

BLM sections mixed with BMA ground along the Musselshell River bottoms provide legal access; bucks rut on the higher flats above the river breaks.

How to Hunt Pronghorn in HD 556

Spot-and-stalk with quality glass is the only game on HD 556 — there is no natural relief to hide a still-hunter.

Glass from Prairie Highs

Climb any available elevation — windmill ridges, erosional benches, old homestead knolls — and grid-glass with a tripod-mounted 15x spotter at dawn and dusk. Pronghorn will appear as white flashes at 1–2 miles.

Use Terrain to Close

Once a shooter buck is located, study Google Earth and the Hunt Planner for every coulee, ditch, and fence line between you and the buck. Crawl-stalk the final 200–400 yards through draws — bucks will pick up movement on skyline at a mile.

Decoy the Rut

Mid-September through early October, a Montana Decoy or antelope silhouette can pull aggressive bucks across fence lines. Works best with a dominant buck already located and actively rutting does.
