Where to Find Elk in HD 445

HD 445 elk center their lives on the Big Snowy Mountains with agricultural fringe migration between the NF and surrounding wheat country.

Big Snowy Crest

Summer and early fall elk hold along the main ridge of the Big Snowies from Greathouse Peak west to Big Snowy Trail. Alpine parks and mid-elevation subalpine fir basins feed the core herd through archery season.

Crystal Lake Basin

Near Crystal Lake Campground, the aspen-conifer mosaic below the crest holds transitional elk through October. Access is easy via FSR 275, which keeps pressure concentrated near the campground.

Agricultural Fringe

Once hunter pressure builds, elk spill north onto private wheat and alfalfa ground. Public access here depends on Block Management enrollment — check the BMA tab annually.
