Where to Find Moose in HD 300-00

Shiras moose in HD 300-00 use the willow-lined creek drainages and beaver-pond complexes of the Highland Mountains country. We focus scouting on any drainage with active beaver dams, heavy willow regeneration, and fresh moose sign. Bulls often bed in adjacent timbered benches within a short walk of their preferred browse.

First- and last-light glassing from elevated vantage points produces the most sightings — mid-day moose disappear into conifer cover and are effectively invisible.

How to Hunt Moose in HD 300-00

We hunt HD 300-00 with patient glassing and careful stalks. Build the trip around first and last light — set up above a willow flat or beaver complex, locate a bull, and close the distance with the wind in your favor. Timber edges make excellent approach corridors on bedded bulls.

Plan pack-out logistics before you shoot. A Shiras bull is 400–500 pounds of boned meat, and remote drainages in the Highlands can mean a long haul back to any trailhead. Budget a full extra day for the pack, and have helpers lined up.

Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest dispersed camping throughout the HD. A few developed campgrounds near Delmoe Lake and the Highland Mountains area. Backcountry camping unrestricted on forest land.

Paved access on I-15 corridor. Forest spur roads into the Highlands range from maintained gravel to rough two-track — 4WD recommended in fall.
