Unit 215-01 (Little Belt Mountains)
Montana Hunting Guide — Elk
HD 215 encompasses a major piece of the Little Belt Mountains in central Montana within the Helena-Lewis & Clark National Forest. Mixed conifer timber, extensive logging roads, and open parks between 5,500 and 8,500 feet support a robust elk herd. The 215-01 permit is a limited antlered/antlerless opportunity layered on top of general-license access. Historical three-year totals of roughly 495 tags against 1,222 applicants put the odds firmly in 'possible with a point or two' territory.

Where to Find Elk in HD 215
Elk in the Little Belts use a classic timber-park mosaic across the Helena-Lewis & Clark NF. Movement patterns track logging activity, hunter pressure, and fall snow.
Upper Belt Creek and Dry Wolf
The headwaters of Belt Creek and the Dry Wolf drainage hold core archery herds. Bulls bugle through mid-September in the high parks above 7,000 feet. Access via Forest Road 251 and the Dry Wolf Campground trailhead.
Judith River Drainages
The South Fork Judith and Lost Fork country on the northeast side of the HD sees fewer hunters. Elk hold in the Douglas fir stringers above the grassy benches during October rifle season.
Burn Regeneration
Older fire footprints in the Little Belts have produced outstanding feed. Glass the regenerating burns at first and last light where elk push into the openings to feed.
