Elk in HD 170-00 use the timbered benches, old burns, and regenerating clearcuts of the North Flathead country. We focus scouting on Flathead National Forest benches where Douglas fir and lodgepole meet regenerating forage, and on drainages adjacent to private agricultural feeding areas where elk transition morning and evening.

Early-season bulls bugle in upper-elevation timbered parks. Rifle-season elk drop into the mid-elevation timber and become significantly harder to pattern without quality sign and pressure mapping.

How to Hunt Elk in HD 170-00

We recommend scouting-heavy trips in the weeks before opening day. Walk every feasible drainage, map sign density, and identify the saddles and timbered benches with the freshest activity. By the time the permit season opens, you should already have two or three primary hunt areas dialed.

During the season, hunt mornings and evenings from pre-set ambush positions along travel corridors. Midday, still-hunt the timbered benches slowly — fresh sign and wind management matter more than covering ground.
