Unit 76-1 is a once-in-a-lifetime moose hunt in Idaho's far southeast corner along the Wyoming and Utah borders, covering the upper Bear River drainage and the Preuss Range foothills. This country holds a small but stable moose population in the willow-lined creek bottoms and aspen draws. It's a very different look from the panhandle moose units — drier, more open, and easier to glass. If you draw, expect a very high success rate and a workable hunt even for hunters with modest experience.

Where to Find Moose in Unit 76-1

Bulls in 76-1 stay tight to willow bottoms and aspen draws. Three pockets consistently hold mature bulls.

Bear River Bottom

Willow complexes along the upper Bear River hold bulls through the season. Glass at dawn from the bluff edges.

Preuss Range Aspen Draws

Aspen draws on the west face of the Preuss Range at 6,800–8,000 ft hold bulls during the rut.

How to Hunt Moose in Unit 76-1

This is low-mileage, high-patience hunting. We park, glass, and wait.

Pick three or four willow pockets along the Bear River and rotate. Glass each for 90 minutes at dawn and again at dusk.

Aspen Draw Still-Hunts

Midday, still-hunt slowly up aspen draws. Bulls bed in the shade and let you walk past unless you cut the right slope.
