Unit 45-1 (Smoky Mountains)

Idaho Hunting Guide — Pronghorn

Unit 45 sits east of Fairfield in the Camas Prairie and Smoky Mountains foothill country of south-central Idaho. Pronghorn use the sagebrush flats of the Camas Prairie and the lower foothill benches, concentrating where irrigated alfalfa abuts open BLM sage. The 45-1 controlled hunt is a limited-tag offering — roughly 45 tags for over 1,100 three-year applicants — that produces respectable mature bucks on a herd that sees modest pressure.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Unit 45-1

Terrain

The Camas Prairie is a broad, high-elevation sagebrush valley bounded north by the Smoky Mountains and south by the Bennett Hills. Pronghorn hold across the central prairie between Fairfield and Corral, shifting to the foothill edges when pressured. Key access points include Soldier Creek Road, Willow Creek Road, and BLM two-tracks off Highway 20.

Elevation

5,000-5,800 ft throughout the prairie, rising to 6,500 ft at the Smoky Mountain foothill edge. Pronghorn rarely use ground above 6,500 ft.

Water

Irrigated hay ground, Soldier Creek, and Camas Creek provide dependable water. Stock tanks on BLM scattered through the prairie are the key mid-day holding points.
