Unit 33-1 (Weiser River)

Idaho Hunting Guide — Mule Deer, Elk

Unit 33 covers the Weiser River country and West Mountains on the Payette National Forest in west-central Idaho. Brushy canyon breaks, open south-facing benches, and timbered ridges produce a reliable mule deer herd with decent buck age structure in the more remote pockets. The 33-1 controlled hunt offers a workable draw — roughly 450 tags over three years against 1,150 applicants — and is one of the most achievable mule deer draws in west-central Idaho.

Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 33-1

Terrain

Unit 33 runs from Weiser River bottomlands at 2,500 feet up to West Mountain ridgelines near 8,000 feet. Productive mule deer ground is the mid-elevation bench country between Council and Cambridge, where bitterbrush and mountain mahogany draws meet ponderosa pine ridges.

Elevation

Mid-September through mid-October, bucks hold 5,500-7,500 ft in the Payette NF high country. Late season drives them to 3,500-5,500 ft winter range along the Weiser River corridor.

Water

The Weiser River is the year-round anchor; Mann Creek, Crane Creek, and Hornet Creek run reliably. Bench country between drainages is dry — bucks concentrate within a half-mile of live water.

This is a reasonable target hunt for anyone willing to apply consistently.
