Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 21

Terrain

Unit 21 is deep canyon and ridge country centered on the South Fork Salmon River. Mule deer use the steep south-facing grass-and-mahogany slopes above the river and the alpine benches at the heads of drainages like Johnson Creek, Profile Creek, and Camp Creek. North-slope timber provides bedding.

Elevation

River grade 4,000 ft; ridgetops over 8,500 ft. Productive mule deer country sits in the 5,500-8,000 ft band.

Water

South Fork Salmon is year-round. Named tributaries (Johnson, Profile, Camp) all hold water. Mid-ridge benches between drainages are dry.

Mule Deer Success Rates

Unit 21 controlled mule deer hunts post 45-60% success — high relative to typical Idaho units because tags are so limited and the animals that survive to maturity in this country are numerous for the hunter count. Buck quality is excellent; 170-190 class bucks are routine for hunters who can reach the upper drainages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How remote is Unit 21?
Very. Access requires driving rough Forest Service roads 40+ miles from the nearest paved highway. Hunting itself typically involves packing in via horse or extensive backpacking.
Is Unit 21 worth the application effort?
If you want true wilderness mule deer hunting with trophy potential and minimal competition, yes. But odds are approximately 1-2% annually, so plan on 30-50 years of applications on average before drawing.
What road access is available to sheep terrain in Unit 21?
US-93 parallels the west face of the Lost River Range through the Lost River Valley, providing excellent glassing access to the steep west escarpment. Several gravel roads and trailheads on the east side provide access via Mackay. Most sheep terrain still requires foot travel after reaching trailheads.
