Unit 2-1X (Boundary)

Idaho Hunting Guide — Mule Deer

Unit 2 sits in Idaho's northernmost panhandle along the Canadian border, spanning the Selkirk and Purcell mountain country west and east of Bonners Ferry. While whitetails dominate the lowland farm country, mule deer hold the higher Selkirk ridgelines and Purcell burn country. The 2-1X controlled hunt is an extra-mandatory tag layered on top of the general season, offering additional opportunity on a herd managed conservatively due to grizzly and caribou overlap.

Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 2-1X

Terrain

Mule deer in Unit 2 live on the high ridgelines of the Selkirk Crest (west of Bonners Ferry) and the Purcell divide (east toward Moyie Springs). Look at burn regeneration from the 2015 and 2018 fires on the Purcell side — those clearings are producing quality brush and grass forage. Selkirk alpine basins above 6,500 feet hold summer bucks.

Elevation

Productive range is 4,500-7,500 feet. Unlike the mule deer country further south, north panhandle deer don't migrate far — they shift vertically within a few miles when snow hits.

Water

Creeks drain both ranges heavily. Trout Creek, Smith Creek, Boulder Creek on the Selkirk side; Meadow Creek and Mission Creek on the Purcell side all run year-round.

Mule Deer Success Rates

Unit 2-1X extra-mandatory mule deer tag hunts have posted success rates in the 15-25% range, lower than central Idaho mule deer units because the population is smaller and the country is thicker. Hunters willing to backpack the Selkirk Crest or scout the Purcell burns significantly outperform road hunters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an extra-mandatory tag in Idaho?
An extra-mandatory tag is a second controlled-hunt tag hunters can apply for in addition to their general deer tag. It's designated by hunt numbers with the X suffix and allows harvesting an extra animal within a specified area and season.
Do I need to worry about grizzly bears in Unit 2?
Yes — Unit 2 is within the Selkirk and Cabinet-Yaak grizzly recovery zones. Carry bear spray, know the difference between grizzly and black bear for any bear tag, and follow food storage rules on the Panhandle NFs.
