Unit 19A covers the Salmon Mountains east of the Middle Fork, encompassing the East Fork of the Salmon River and bordering the Challis drainage. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep occupy the high ridgelines and rocky drainages of this rugged mountain landscape. The unit receives fewer applications than the adjacent Middle Fork units, but draw odds remain extremely competitive. Access improves along the eastern fringe, where road networks provide a starting point for foot or horse travel into sheep country.

Sheep in Unit 19A are distributed across the rocky ridgelines and canyon faces of the Salmon Mountains between the East Fork Salmon River and the Middle Fork drainage.

High Ridgeline Escape Terrain

Bighorn consistently use the rocky points and cliff bands along the main ridges above 7,000 feet as escape terrain. Glass these areas first light — sheep are often visible on exposed rocky outcrops before descending to feed on the open slopes below.

East Fork Salmon Sidehills

The open bunchgrass slopes above the East Fork Salmon River corridor between 5,000 and 7,500 feet are prime sheep feeding habitat. South and southwest-facing slopes dry out faster after storms and attract sheep to the exposed grasses and forbs.
