Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 11A

Terrain

The Hells Canyon rim rises 5,000+ feet from the Snake River to timbered ridgelines near 7,000 feet. Classic mule deer ground is the broken country 3,000-5,500 feet where canyon grass meets ponderosa pine stringers. Key access: Deer Creek Road south of Whitebird, Pittsburg Saddle, and the rim road above the Salmon River.

Elevation

Productive range 3,500-6,500 ft. Summer bucks hold in the timber at the rim edge; October bucks drop to the mid-elevation grass benches and pine stringers.

Water

The Snake and Salmon rivers border the unit. Interior drainages — Deer Creek, Pittsburg Creek, China Creek — run reliably. Mid-slope grass country can be dry for miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How physical is a Unit 11A mule deer hunt?
Very. Canyon country routinely requires 2,000-4,000 ft vertical descents to reach bucks and equivalent climbs to retrieve meat. Plan on at least one rest day between big efforts and train accordingly before the hunt.
Can I float-in hunt Unit 11A from the Snake River?
Yes — jet-boat or raft trips from the Hells Canyon NRA put hunters on remote benches rarely accessed by rim-based hunters. Outfitter-assisted float hunts are available and significantly reduce pack-out complexity.
How thick is the timber in Unit 11A?
Very thick. Expect visibility of 50-100 yards in much of the unit. Plan shot opportunities accordingly.
