Unit S39

Rams in Unit S39 use the steep cliff bands and broken rock faces along the Arkansas River canyon walls, often visible from the river corridor or canyon rim roads. Ewes and lambs frequent benches with a mix of short grasses and rocky escape terrain above the river.

Glass the canyon walls from elevated viewpoints along Highway 50 and the Royal Gorge area — binoculars often reveal sheep bedded on ledges during midday.

Locate target rams during summer scouting trips from canyon overlooks before the season opens. Plan stalk routes through the broken canyon terrain — approach from above whenever possible to use gravity in your favor.

Physical fitness is critical; the canyon walls are extremely demanding. Many hunters spike camp on the canyon rim to minimize daily elevation gain to sheep habitat.
