Unit G11 (Weminuche / San Juan Mountains)

Mountain goats in DAU G11 inhabit the sheer cliffs, talus fields, and alpine ridges of the Weminuche Wilderness above 11,000 feet. The San Juan Mountains provide some of Colorado's most dramatic goat terrain.

Summer and Early Season

In late summer, goats are found on the highest ridges and cliff faces, often visible from a distance as white specks on dark rock. Focus your glass on north-facing cliff bands and talus slopes above treeline on peaks such as those in the Chicago Basin area.

Late Season

As weather deteriorates, goats may drop slightly in elevation but rarely abandon cliff terrain. Winter billies often congregate on wind-swept ridges where snow clears from the rock. Trail approaches from Durango or Silverton serve as the primary access corridors into the Weminuche.

Mountain goat hunting in the Weminuche demands exceptional physical conditioning and backcountry self-sufficiency. Plan for multiple nights in the wilderness.

Glassing Strategy

Set up on high saddles and use a quality spotting scope to cover miles of cliff band and talus. Goats are visible at long range against dark rock — take time to identify sex and evaluate horns before committing to an approach.

Stalking on Cliffs

Approach goats from above whenever possible. They are less alert to danger from above than below. Move slowly on talus and never rush a stalk near cliff edges. Having a partner is strongly recommended for safety.

Logistics in the Weminuche

The Weminuche Wilderness requires pack-in access from trailheads near Silverton, Durango, or Creede. Horse or llama packing is popular for gear hauling. Plan for a 5–10 mile approach to prime goat terrain.
