Unit 791

Mule deer in Unit 791 concentrate in the cedar-juniper and pinyon breaks along the canyon drainages of the Comanche National Grassland, using the brushy draws for cover and feeding in the adjacent grassland during morning and evening.

The canyon breaks along the Purgatoire River and seasonal drainages hold the highest deer concentrations, especially in late season when deer retreat from open prairie to sheltered canyon habitats.

Glass the open grassland and canyon edges from vehicle or mesa tops at first and last light — southeast Colorado's open terrain allows spotting deer at long distances. Plan a ground stalk from canyon rims onto bedded deer in the brushy draws below.
