The 27/28 combined unit deer use the full elevation gradient from the Gila Valley floor to the high spruce-fir of Mt. Graham.

Pinaleno Oak Zone (5,000–7,000 ft)

The primary Coues habitat is the Madrean oak woodland band on the Pinaleno flanks. This zone holds the highest deer densities and is the most productive glassing terrain — glass the oak-grassland edges from elevated positions at dawn.

High Spruce-Fir Summit

Mt. Graham's summit spruce-fir forest produces the largest and oldest bucks with minimal pressure. Access via Safford-Morenci Road to Riggs Flat Lake area. Day hike from the summit to hunt the high forest.
