Unit 06A (Clifton/Blue Range Coues)

Coues deer in Unit 06A concentrate in the oak woodland zones of the Blue River canyon country and the warmer lower-elevation areas of the unit's south.

Blue River Canyon Oak Zone

The oak-encinal woodland bands along the Blue River drainage hold small Coues deer populations in terrain adjacent to the elk-dominant higher country. Glass canyon walls at dawn for deer feeding on rocky slopes above the river.

Lower Mogollon Fringe

The lower-elevation areas in the southern portions of 6A transition to oak-grassland habitat that supports more typical Coues deer concentrations. This is the primary zone for targeting whitetail specifically in this elk-dominant unit.

Coues hunting in Unit 6A requires focused effort in the unit's specific oak woodland zones — the terrain is primarily known for elk and mule deer.

Oak Woodland Glass-and-Stalk

Target the Madrean oak woodland pockets in the canyon systems. Glass from elevated positions at dawn and identify deer in the oak park edges. The rugged canyon terrain means stalks require planning — use canyon topography for concealment.
